These unusual pliers are a great innovation from Knipex. Although they belong to the family of pipe and water pump pliers, they're actually designed for a much more specific purpose. Knipex *SpeedGrip* pliers are in fact for sink traps and connectors. And, as it happens, they also make excellent oil filter pliers. *SpeedGrip* pliers can handle filter housings with diameters up to 80 mm. They are 250 mm long, which gives you plenty of leverage for loosening stubborn filters.
